Greetings everyone! I've been busy trying to gather information and other resources online for a card game I'll start developing later on this year. Perhaps we can all share the resources we've come across online related to making card games in this thread. These are a few of the things I've come across so far:

FREE

1) Go Deck Yourself - http://www.godeckyourself.com

CATEGORY: TEMPLATES

They seem to have some pre-composed deck templates based off of already established games. But they also have some blank slate templates that might work well for card designs. They all seem to be in .pdf format.

2) Magic Set Editor - http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net/

CATEGORY: SOFTWARE>TEMPLATES

Came across this site looking for Magic like templates. It looks like they have a program that allows you to create custom cards based on pre-existing card templates from prominent card game creation companies. I'm thinking about getting in touch with the programmer of this editing software to see if it might be able to be tweeked to support other, custom-made card templates.

3) Nan Deck - www.nand.it/nandeck‎

CATEGORY: SOFTWARE>DESIGN

Added by: pythonix - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/pythonix

This looks to be a program you can use to organize, arrange, and easily edit a card deck of your creation. The website says the program is available on Windows, Linux and Mac OS. From the looks of it, it appears this may make editing card details like icons, text based information and more conveniently easy.' :^) If you are organizing a starter deck, test set, or perhaps even a finalized set of trading cards this may be something worth your while to check out. The program also links up with BoardGameGeek.com "to download data to create charts with historical games' stats."

4) Carta Genius - http://pandocreon.com/logiciels/carta-genius‎

CATEGORY: SOFTWARE>PRINT

Added by: pythonix - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/pythonix

This is apparently a resource that can be used to organize and convert your card game images into a print ready .pdf file. Here's more from their website:

"Carta-Genius is a software that helps you when you want to generate PDF files with playing cards inside. These PDF files could be used by professional printers to make digital printings. Pandocréon's cards are made with this tool. The software compute automatically the cards' position on the pages, depending of paper and cards size, and draw cut lines at the right places."

Probably translated from French, so please do excuse any typos or errors in translation that might have occurred with that quote.

5) LACKEYCCG- http://www.lackeyccg.com/ccgdesign.html

CATEGORY: SOFTWARE/TUTORIALS/TEMPLATES

Added by: apeloverage - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/apeloverage

The link goes directly to the page apeloverage provided with the tutorial and 2 free Photoshop template downloads. The downloads are large enough to be used for digital purposes, but will not be suitable for high-resolution print as they cap out at 314px X 456px at 72 dpi. I must say I like the template design though!

The main resource this website provides comes in the form of a program that can be used to play a Collectible Card Game online. It looks pretty good. Here is the feature list: Play any Collectible Card Game Online; Runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux; Full card images; 3D views and graphics; Innovative sound features; Play with up to 10 players in 1 game; Find opponents on the server; Proxy server support; Create your own CCG; Build decks with the deck editor; Customizable appearence with playmats, avatars, and skins.

6) Game-icons.net- http://game-icons.net

CATEGORY: GRAPHICS>ICONS

Added by: x_equals_speed - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/x_equals_speed

At the time of this post, the people at this site have 1,078 freely downloadable icons you can use in your card games; or for any other purposes. The downloads come in .svg and .png formats. They seem fairly well done and are available under the Creative Commons 3.0 BY license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

7) Card Print Template (Glue-less & tape-less) - http://i.imgur.com/uWcugJC.png?1‎

CATEGORY: PRINT>TEMPLATES

Added by: SirPaper - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/SirPaper

This seems to be a decent resource for those looking to quickly assemble mock up cards using only paper and scissors. SirPaper has provided the following instruction for those interested: http://boardgamegeek.com/article/13618019#13618019

8) CCG Maker - http://www.ccgmaker.com/

CATEGORY: SOFTWARE>TEMPLATES

This is a great free resource for people looking to set up decent looking cards fairly fast. Here's a quote from their home page:

"This web site is all about a piece of software called the CCG Maker. It's a small program that allows the design of your own Collectable Card Game (CCG) Cards. You can design cards in minutes, save them to your hard drive, or even print them out to play with. You can import and export Customized Card Templates, Mana Symbols, and Set Symbols ; or make your own."

9) CardMaker - https://www.nhmk.com/tools.php

BOARD GAME GEEK UPDATES: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/847000/card-maker-09908-upda...

CATEGORY: SOFTWARE>DESIGN

This seems to be a good free resource for those looking to create and organize sets of cards. It appears the creator is regularly updating and improving this program, as well as providing tutorials for people wanting to give it a go. The creator also has an update page right here on the Board Game Geek forums.

10) Strange Eons - http://www.cgjennings.ca/eons/index.html

CATEGORY: SOFTWARE>DESIGN

Added by: Jacob Busby - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/Jacob%20Busby

This is an excellent addition to the free section. Strange Eons is an all in one tool used for customizing paper-based games. It was created by Christopher G. Jennings and includes card deck building/designing options, token designing options, templates for creating card tuck boxes, and support for individuals seeking to edit templates form popular games like Talisman and Arkham Horror. The help section of the website is also well done. Check it out!

11) Squib - http://andymeneely.github.io/squib/

CATEGORY: SOFTWARE>DESIGN

Added by: clearclaw - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/clearclaw

Here's something for the Ruby coders out there! Squib is a Ruby based language for prototyping card and board games. The DSL allows for things like creating "a concise set of rules for laying out your cards; loading PNGs and SVGs using Cairo; reading xlsx and csv files; rendering to individual PNGs, PNG sheets, or PDF sheets; and more. If you are familiar with Ruby, definitely give this a go.

12) HCCD - HTML + CSS Card Designer - https://github.com/vaemendis/hccd/

CATEGORY: SOFTWARE>DESIGN

Added by: Twin - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/Twin

Informational Image:

If you've been wanting to put together cards by inputting information through spreadsheets and/or CSV (Comma Separated Variable) files, and have a program magically create cards based on your spreadsheet data, look no further! Github member vaemendis has created a superb java program that takes .csv files and converts them into printable card contact sheets through the power of html and css. Use the final results online or physically through print!

PURCHASE

1) Manifestation CCS (Card Creation Source) - http://www.manifestationccs.com

FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/ManifestationCCS

CATEGORY: DESIGN>CARD TEMPLATES / GRAPHICS>ICONS / DESIGN SERVICES>DESIGN>ILLUSTRATION>ICONS>BOARD GAMES / TUTORIALS

Promo Video

This is very promising for Photoshop users. They provide card frame templates that have flexible, convertible layouts. There are links to purchase high-quality, Fantasy (Past Age) themed, and Sci-Fi (Future Age) themed card game border templates on their website. All of the template sets come with vector icons, special layer styles, and instruction manuals that give users a very wide range of options for card customization. They also have a growing set of Icons available for purchase; and are providing Design Services ranging from Card Template Design to Icon Design, Illustrations, and everything else you could possibly need to develop graphics for Board Games. This is a one-stop shop!

2) Game Cards Design Kit - http://graphicriver.net/item/game-cards-design-kit/1223481?r...

CATEGORY: DESIGN>TEMPLATES

Here's another Photoshop card frame template that looks really good. Medieval style themes and apparently a good number of predefined layouts. This one's only going for $6, and it comes packed with a wide assortment of backgrounds, border element styles and more. They've also included an instruction manual.

3) TCG - Fantasy Trading Card Game Kit in Medieval - http://graphicriver.net/item/tcg-fantasy-trading-card-game-k...

CATEGORY: DESIGN>TEMPLATES

This one costs $6 as well. It looks like this one comes with 4 different pre-defined card templates (even though the promo piece says 3). A really nice medieval style theme, fine details and various color options. The promo piece also says it comes with "Lifetime Updates." I guess the creator will be updating the package for its entire life-span. Might be a good deal.

4) The Game Crafter - https://www.thegamecrafter.com/publish/pricing

CATEGORY: PRINTING/MARKETPLACE

Added by: eponym - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/eponym

From what I understand about The Game Crafter, they provide " ad hoc printing of cards in a variety of sizes," as stated by eponym. It also seems they provide an online location to promote and sell board games you've finalized using their services. Although I don't know how long they've been around, it looks like this may be a company that is really likely to expand in their capabilities with the way they are headed. If you need printing and promotion check them out!

5) The Noun Project- http://thenounproject.com

CATEGORY: GRAPHICS>ICONS

Added by: x_equals_speed - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/x_equals_speed

This looks to be a really good resource for icons! It has a large pool of designers providing their well-crafted icons for commercial use (purchase) or limited use under a Creative Commons 'Attribution' license http://thenounproject.com/using-symbols/. The icons they provide are rather "minimalist" in design so those of you looking for more detailed icon styles may need to continue your search! Either way, give this site a look. Their search engine is really cool.

6) Collectable Card Game Template Pack - http://graphicriver.net/item/collectable-card-game-template-...

CATEGORY: DESIGN>TEMPLATES

If you've got more than one card game idea in mind and need high-quality predefined card designs these card game templates seem to be the right ones to go for. At $15 this package includes "14 ready to use" card templates in fantasy, horror, scifi and steampunk visual genres; 50 example background materials; 24 black and white texture overlays; 20 gem styles in .psd and .asl formats; an extensive .ai icon file; and a help file to help with the development of your cards! Give it a looksee.

7) Drive Thru Cards- http://drivethrucards.com?affiliate_id=582346

CATEGORY: PRINTING/MARKETPLACE

Added by: dabuel - http://boardgamegeek.com/user/dabuel

An incredible resource for people looking to print cards on demand; in the same way people have resorted to selling books by printing them on demand! According to their informational .pdf:

"DriveThruCards.com is part of a family of sites operated by OneBookShelf, operator of premiere online marketplaces for eBooks and print-on-demand comic books, roleplaying games, and fiction for over ten years. Over 800 publishers-from big names you've seen in print to small press innovators-have come together to make sure customers can get what they want, when they want it.

DriveThruCards is a marketplace dedicated to stand-alone card games, custom poker decks, deck-building games, and other card products delivered in high-quality printed formats."

8) Printer's Studio - http://www.printerstudio.com/unique-ideas/blank-playing-card...

CATEGORY: PRINTING

This appears to be a good source to get a deck of cards printed with custom artwork. They have many card sizes available including: Poker Size, Bridge Size, Mini Size, Tarot Size and others. They might be a good resource to use for test deck printing.

9) Card Game Kit Template - http://graphicriver.net/item/card-game-kit-template/7045786?...

CATEGORY: DESIGN>TEMPLATES

This card game template kit includes 4 different predefined template layouts/themes, that each take advantage of Photoshop's Smart Object feature, allowing you to incorporate your artwork fairly easily. It's only $5 and includes what looks to be 2 modern/present day themes and 2 fantasy related themes. Check them out!

10) Superior Pod - http://www.superiorpod.com/category/custom-card-decks#.UzsPV...

CATEGORY: PRINTING

This is an online, print-on-demand resource that covers 6 different card sizes, custom and large game/deck boxes, and a number of other print media sure to aid in your game's development!

11) Drive Thru Cards: Publisher Resources - http://www.drivethrucards.com/browse.php?filters=44843_0_0_0...

CATEGORY: DESIGN/ILLUSTRATION/TEMPLATES

A listing of around 30 (at the time of this posting) different digital resources that can be used for anything from game prototypes, to game testing, game design and a lot more. I'm fairly certain there will be more resources added to this listing as time progresses.

12) Drive Thru RPG: Publisher Resources - http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/browse.php?filters=0_2890_0_0_...

CATEGORY: DESIGN/ILLUSTRATION/TEMPLATES

Here is a list of nearly 4,000 (at the time of this posting) digital resources that can be used to aid in the creation of any card game; or board game for that matter. Drive Thru RPG's market place includes everything from textures, to backgrounds; character illustrations, card templates and much more. There's a lot to check out here so make sure you know what you're searching for beforehand!

13) ePic Character Image and Token Generator - http://epicgenerator.net/index.php/shop/

CATEGORY: SOFTWARE/ILLUSTRATION/DESIGN

Quoted directly from the site:

"The program is an excellent tool to anyone who wants realistic character portraits in no time. You can simply choose what items to display on the base character, save your image with a static or transparent background and use it for anything you would like to."

14) Sci-Fi Card Template - https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/17409

CATEGORY: DESIGN>TEMPLATES

A 3 color set of Sci-Fi themed card game templates, including both card fronts and backs. These Photoshop templates include 72 ppi and 300 ppi versions; but the creator states "this product is not designed for printing, so if you insist printing it you might have trouble doing so, for which I am not to be blamed." Seems to be a good resource for those seeking digital solutions to card game design!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

These are the resources we've come across so far. Please do share any online resources you may know of that will aid in the creation of card games! I know there are probably many more things floating in cyberspace related to making/generating artwork, promoting your games, and other things of that nature. Thanks!

Wow! These are really great resources! I'm going to have to really give these a good look. I'm actually the creator of the Manifestation CCS project I linked up there. These will be great to determine what people are looking for in regards to icons for games.

Here's a template for cards that can be printed with standard printer paper and assembled without glue or tape. The cards should also be thick enough to be shuffleable without needing sleeves.

http://i.imgur.com/uWcugJC.png?1

Assembly instructions:

1: Cut out the cards along the black lines. (There will be 4 cards per template)
2: Fold the tabs in along the grey lines.
3: Fold the card in half along the center grey line.
4: Link the tabs together (Start with the top and bottom of the card. This part takes some practice. Make sure the tabs are inside the card and not sticking out.)
5: Close the two open corners (You should see a tab and a pocket in each corner that you can link together.)
6: Once you've assembled all of the cards place them between some heavy books to further flatten them.

Would strongly suggest printing out the blank template first and practicing with that before you start adding your own graphics to it. Should help with getting used to assembling the cards.

Also sorry for the quick and dirty assembly instructions. Let me know if you need any clarification on that.

Oh, and if anyone DOES use this template for their own game, you can also feel free to copy/paste the assembly instructions as well. (Assuming they're clear enough as is.)

Excellent list! Thanks for putting all of this together. I'm familiar with some of these - but many of them are completely new to me, which means I need to spend a few hours checking them out!

If anyone has any questions about DriveThruCards or The Game Crafter, feel free to ask. I've put out a few games through each and I'm currently using them both to produce more professional prototypes to show around.

Thanks, just one change in the first post. For the glue-less template it also says paperless. It is definitely not paperless. (It's just designed for standard paper instead of needing something thicker)

You could always help the creators of these files and going to them direct and let them give you a quote for the work.
