I'm thinking along the lines of base / vanilla games or major expansions, (rather than accessories, etc).

And why? Are the multiples primarily to play or for collecting or a damaged copy perhaps?

Are there multiples you plan / hope to get?

Give examples if you wish!

I have only a few in my collection:

2x Memoir '44 - Play
2x Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game - Play
2x Dungeon Command: Blood of Gruumsh - Play
3x Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie - Play
3x Heroscape Master Set: Swarm of the Marro - Play

Cheers,

I have 2 copies of Exago because I wanted to get more tiles. The game doesn't come with enough tiles to fill the board because that is not how the game is played; however, I wanted extra tiles so I could play other games with the pieces and explore different play options.

I have duplicate copies of certain games because I like to bring a copy and leave a couple, at my work office - I work in higher education at a Nontraditional student center - and have another copy at my house to play with friends.

War of the Ring: Traded for another copy to paint.

Keyflower: Just pledged on KS for a second copy-- 34 bucks, why not, I'll either be able to trade it for that much at least, or I'll keep the first edition in shrink because I really like the Key Series!

X-Wing: Probably doesn't count, since it's sort of designed to buy a ton of stuff, but I definitely have bought a ton of stuff.

2 de Mayo: I bought one at the same time my secret santa did one year. Oops!

Ogre: I have three copies coming. It's either going to be an awesome game, or be worth more than the 60 bucks MM is charging for it someday!

CCGs can probably be left out, but I definitely have way more Magic cards and SWCCG cards than I actually need to build decks

A few reasons:

- New edition (sometimes with new artwork or rules)
- Preparing to replace a worn copy (especially if the game is out of print)
- Allowing more players to play or extra large scenarios or setups (Memoir'44, Carabande, Wings of War)
- Running a tournament--having multiple copies is handy.
- Find a back up copy cheap at a garage sale, thrift store, flea market, auction, etc.
- Second copy given to you as a gift, swag at a con, prize, etc.
- CCG's that force you buy multiple copies.
- Forget you had a copy when you bought your second.
- Included as a throw in a trade.
- Collecting (foreign language editions, special editions, promotional ties ins, etc.)
- Different sets for different needs (a travel chess set vs. finely carved with inlaid board, etc.)
- Use the pieces for game design projects.
- Leave copies at multiple locations: at work, at home, at your local games store which host a game night, at parent's house, etc. so you don't have to carry them everywhere.

I have two power grids, but only because I bought a bundle of 5 games online. Four of the games I didn't have, but now I have an extra power grid. I'm not planning on keeping it though

I have two copies of Crossword; the reason for this is that I have created two varients, which you can view here:

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/985282/two-varients-for-cros...

Also, I have travel versions of the following games, as well as owning the originals:
- Othello
- UNO Stacko
- Scrabble

Have two copies of the base battlestar game.

When we first played the game a friend spilled a pint of water over the game board cry

The board was salvageable but a second copy was bought in case.

I - along with many other suckers - have two copies of the Lord of the Rings: The Card Game base set. (Ideally one would have three copies of each card in the game, Fantasy Flight only included 1 or 2 copies of many of the cards in the base set, to the chagrin and consternation of many)

Also, I have four copies of Pieces of Eight (2 each of the two different sets) so that two players can play with the full complement of coins to select from, or up to four players, employing drafting or some other such method of fairly distributing the available coins.

In short: I've bought multiple copies per the dictates of my completist mentality.

UNO X4? decks, a couple were gifts but we kept them as it's handy for larger groups and I prefer to just do one big shufflefest instead of every other hand ..
Animal Upon Animal - to make it harder & last longer
Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie X2 and Heroscape Expansion Set: Fortress of the Archkyrie X4 - for large landscaping/castles/bigger armies ..
PitchCar + PitchCar Extension 2: More Speed More Fun + PitchCar Extension 5: The Cross X2 each = bigger better tracks and more cars for parties

I really want to get another Loopin' Louie too, to make this:

Some of my multiple copies are to allow for more players/bigger games:
3x Battleball
3x Loot
2x Portable Adventures: Lair of the Rat-King
2x Stir 'em Up! The Flipping & Switching Word Game

Some are just different versions:
2x Go
3x Pente
2x Sequence
4x Mastermind

And 1 is necessary to make the game better and more balanced:
2x A Game of Thrones: The Card Game

We had 4 copies of Bora Bora to use to trade for OOP games that I wanted, or just expensive games (Le Havre, EastFront II series, etc).

We have 5 copies of RotV and 3 (4?) SotM for Heroscape for larger boards (plus we use Heroscape tiles to make 3D boards for Memoir '44, BattleLore, etc.

Outside of Heroscape, the only reason we ever get duplicates of a game is to sell/trade up.

X-Wing: Miniatures (more Tie Fighters and dice!) and Android: Netrunner (those bastards!)

Just thought of another one... Chess! I have a magnetic travel set and a plastic teaching set (No Stress Chess) and I've been begging my wife to give me an heirloom quality set.

Owned two copies of Risk Legacy because I was playing two different campaigns. Since you modify the game and its components as you play it, it was necessary to buy multiple copies.

Crunch: The Game for Utter Bankers x2 - for occasions of more than 4 players (not that I've actually played it yet!)

Grass x2 - prefer longer games, and play with a 'remove 1/3 of the deck' house rule. Also allows for more than 6 players.

War on Terror x2 - one shrink-wrapped, un-played, 1st edition copy and one un-wrapped, played, 2nd edition copy.

And, temporarily:

Get Bit! x2 - both Deluxe Tin Edition - one will be a gift.

Typically only when I convince myself I don't need a spare copy. Which does happen, occasionally.
