I know my definition of "older games" might be controversial but I made this list so make yo' own list if you want something different.

I am wondering what games, published before 2003, do you think have stood the test of time? You might not play them regularly but definitely would play them if someone suggested it. I would love to take some time to look at older games. In particular, Tigris & Euphrates has been on my 'try' list for far too long. What do you like? Maybe a top 5 list?

Taj Mahal, Amun-Re, Tigris & Euphrates, and most of the early Alea games have stood the test of time. Heard of Puerto Rico; that one continues to stay in the top tiers.

Roads & Boats has done quite well.

Carolus Magnus is one of the best area majorities games.
El Grande back in 1995, and still going strong as a favorite of many loyal fans.

The list goes on and on...Chinatown got a reprint, as did The Princes of Florence and Goa ( I guess 2004 is over your limit, but still stands the test of time)

That is a good idea. I might give it a bit to let the forum regulars post and then move it to a Geeklist. Can't imagine that this doesn't already exist as a GL in some form. Maybe repeats are ok if it has been long enough?

fun idea for a list!

Tigris & Euphrates is a great game, definitely try it!

Two more of my favorites make the list: Industrial Waste and Stephenson's Rocket. Also, Java.

I might have to make a list cutting off at 2004 since Antiquity and Reef Encounter would otherwise be eliminated.

ETA: Friendless stats made this very easy to look up. To the list I'll add Age of Steam, Bohnanza, Ricochet Robots, and Tikal (bidding rules).

Puerto Rico (2002) is definitely one of the best.

Other "old" games I still play are Through the Desert (1998) and Lost Cities (1999).

Carolus Magnus - we thrifted this and it looked boring, but we liked to try almost everything once. Liked it much more than I expected, and went from a flip to a keeper.

Acquire - ditto.

I think a lot of the euros that Rio Grande published have stood the test of time. Sadly, they are letting many of them go out of print.

I would definitely participate in a geeklist for this topic.

I find I often prefer the older style. There were lots of games that were complex but the complexity did not come from cards or from long rule sets

Some older games I still want to play often
Acquire
Around the World in 80 Days
Can't Stop
El Grande
Hive
Igel Ärgern
Solitaire for Two
Java
Kreta
Kaliko
Metropolis
Oasis
Pueblo
RoboRally
Reef Encounter
Survive: Escape from Atlantis!
Samurai
Streetcar
Tigris & Euphrates
Timbuktu
Tikal
Trias
Torres
Visionary

Most of the euro card games I play I think are from before 2004 as well but I don't have time now to look them up

I recieved a reprint of Montage in the kickstarter reprint but still have't found anyone who will try it.

Someone is my game group tried trying 50 of the top 100 BBG games this year so see what of the older games were still fun

Both Catan and Carcassonne are classics that I think people will still be playing in 50 years. I don't play Settlers much anymore, but that's more about who I'm playing with than my willingness to play it. I still like to play Carc.

El Grande is great. You should definitely try it if you haven't.

Bohnanza is excellent. Arguably Uwe Rosenberg's best game.

To throw a wild card into my top five, I'll also say The Bottle Imp. It's a brilliantly themed trick-taking game (!) devil
