In 2007-2008 we had simultaneous action selection as a basic mechanic of the game. We tried out several variants, with selections done behind player screens and with cards. It worked well mechanically and really speeded up the game, but conceptually it did not work with the epic feel we wanted the game to have. The guessing and double-guessing took too much focus from the rest of the game.

When 7 Wonders came out we saw that our decision to drop simultaneous action selection was the right one, it is much more suitable in a short civilization game than in a long one.

For a long time we had much more direct comparison between players at the end of the game, having more production capabilities in each category was what you aimed for. 7 Wonders showed how direct comparisons during the game can be made more interesting, and we have since it came out restructured the scoring system completely.
