So, got the expansion and friends were so excited to play it that seven showed up rather than six. So, we played with one complet set of influence & market cards, added Solonius's "brother-in-law" with the same abilities as Solonius, added a enough extra starting cards to equip that character, and then....
Played a 3 player and a 4 player game simultaneously (both drawing from the one deck), with the twist that players could "bump" other players from the "better" arena (with 4 players) to the "pits" with 3 players if they had more influence. We didn't worry about keeping the phases of the two games in sync (which would bog the individual games down) - but simply ruled that you could swap at the end of any phase in your game and theirs. For example, if you had more influence at the end of your game's influence phase than someone at the better arena - you could bump that other player whenever it was the end of ANY phase in their game.
It worked well. It was a bit autobalancing because the players in the "pits" 3 player game would still have 4 market cards, and also their turns would play a bit faster allowing more potential influence gains. There was only a modest number of player swaps so it didn't bog down excessively.
We also ruled you could call a primus at influence 7 rather than 10, but there ended up being only 1 primus anyway.
Still excited to try the six player as intended - but I do recommend the above mod highly for 7 (or maybe even 8).
