Hi

I'm looking for a simple game with simple rules that just contain one die.

Do you know of anything that is more exciting than snakes and ladders?

Going down the list of games that I've played and want to play, Survive: Escape from Atlantis! and Takenoko are the only games with 1 die that fits your "simple rules, simple game" description.

Small World, but it's a special die used for (usually) the last conquest of your turn if you lack chits.

Glen More also has a die numbered 1-3, used to represent the dummy player in 2-3P games.

Right, even Takenoko (which is a great simple game) is too complicated

Maybe you should explain your requirements in a little more detail, Staffan.

I suspect this is some kind of programming assignment.

Am I right?

Or

Classic Warlord

Both the same game in different versions. Very simple rules, brilliant game.

Trouble: one die, very simple, marginally more exciting than Snakes and Ladders.

Despite the name, Cthulhu Dice contains only a single custom 12-sided die (and some counters). However, it is quite poorly regarded from what I understand.

Yes, you are correct!

Thus if it is a simple board (or just cards) that is used in the game this would be nice. Also the fewer other stuff that is in the game (a lot of different action cards, a lot of different kinds of piece etc.) the better.

Liar's dice would have been a good example if it had only used one die (how that could be possible )

Well, they could be lying about the number of dice.

I've seen several versions of Ludo (which itself is a variant in the Pachisi/Trouble/Sorry/etc. family), but the version we play with our kids uses a single D6. It's better (in my opinion) than S&L because it does offer some basic tactical decision making. The decision making isn't complex -- probably only significant as a kid's game or a programming assignment, but it might fit the bill.

There's a traditional pen-and-paper game similar to Cootie that's played with one die. I know, that's not much more exciting than Snakes & Ladders.

Apropos programming, a friend and I once played that at a restaurant while we were waiting to be seated. We didn't have a die, so we did three coin flips, threw out the sets that were all heads or all tails, then converted the resulting binary number to decimal.

Give Me the Brain! is a pretty simple game that uses just one die, and a double deck of cards. Programming the actions for some of the cards might be too much to take on, though.

Hey, did Peyo (the inventor of Smurfs) design board games!? He is stated as Artist in Trouble!

Mindbubbling... anyways, back to subject

I'd definitely look at Unexploded Cow then - the mechanisms are all very simple, and there's a very small number of cow types all of which work in a very simple way.

I dare say you can probably still get the print and play version of it too.
