Today I received an email from a friend, and in it they wrote "C02" (C zero 2) instead of CO2. It made me realize that I have see this mistake many times here on these forums and other places. It got me wondering.

You folks who write C02:
Do you believe that the zero is correct, or is it just a typo?
Do you actually say "C zero 2"?
Is this just a side effect of the common habit of saying O for zero, such as in phone numbers?
Basically, why are you typing a zero instead of an O? Are you familiar with the elements and how to note molecules?

O requires two key presses, 0 requires one.

Clearly, this is an easier way to refer to the little known 2% version of carbon. Typing C.02 would be too difficult when hurrying to type an entry into a forum.

This rare form of carbon is only produced when great quantities are inserted into the rectum of a spendthrift. I have been successful at creating several of these specimens myself. A word of caution; the resultant release of energy was catastrophic, rendering my basement uninhabitable for several days. whistle

It has nothing to do with the gas, it's military code.

Like how zero dark thrity was the code for capturing Bin Laden, C Zero Two is the code for capturing Al Gore.

Of course I've been up all night! Not because of caffeine, it was insomnia. I couldn't stop thinking about coffee.

In a sense they are not on the same keyboard at all:
'O' is on the same keyboard as ')'
while '0' is on the same keyboard as 'o'

Unless you are using caps lock, which I see a lot of people do, even for just one letter.

I do it so people will get puffed up about their superior intelligence and underestimate me.

It's two carbon atoms, so zero-two makes perfect sense.

Then it's working perfectly.
