The first turn the shadow got three eyes. The Free rolled all musters. With only the elves active, they decided to get them to war and put an extra elite in Woodland Realm. The fellowship sat tight.

The next turn was the same but moreso: FIVE EYES! Mordor looked to be going for Gondor, so the FP activated them with Wisdom of Elrond and then got them to war with Guards of the Citadel. (because playing the Will of the West variant here: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/99456 ). Gondor marched out to Osgiliath.

Third turn the FP finally rolled a non army-muster-palantir - a Will of the West which immediately went to zapping The Palantir of Orthanc. As a result the Witch King was able to dance his army around Osgiliath and into Druadan Forest, putting the lone regular in Minas Tirith under siege from the forgotten road. Gondor's Osgiliath army was large and well-led, and they burned a ring to strike back. Gondor was gaining the upper hand so the Witch King retreated back to Druadan with a token force. Minas Tirith was saved.

However, orcs were not the only minions of Sauron. A Horde from the East appeared near the DEW line. Many Kings to the Service of Mordor buffed up Harondor. These elephants stomped through Pelargir and sacked Dol Amroth. In the north Will of the West rules were creating an interesting situation. Swords in Eriador had mustered the dwarves down the political track, so an Easterling assault on the lone dwarf in Iron Hills would allow Erebor to go to war and recruit an elite before falling under siege. With the wood elves of Woodland Realm already at double their traditional forces, this could doom the whole expidition. Instead the Easterlings went around and captured Dale.

The fellowship slowly crawled through the mines of Moria without incident. Worn with Sorrow and Toil was on the table, so they declared in Lorien ... more delay!

The Easterlings decided to besiege Woodland Realm before the elves got their fifth army. A small band of Beorings in Northern Mirkwood suprised the besiegers with Help Unlooked For, causing the easterlings to fall back to Dale. The combined Northern/Elven army was soon joined by Gandlaf the Grey and the Prince of Mirkwood. For their part, the easterlings were led by the Witch King and four Nazgul. They tried again by besieging Erebor, but the allies were faster, coming up from Dale to break the siege (barely) and forcing the remaining regular into Withered Heath. The Witch King escaped, but four Nazgul were not so lucky, getting killed by the combined Dwarf-Elf-North army the next turn. The Free had now broken three sieges already!

However, the DEW-north allies were bled white, and still rolling only 4 dice to the Shadow's 10. There were still 9 hits of trolls and such sitting on the lonely elf regular at Woodland Realm. They decided to lock up the dwarves while they were weak. The Witch King returned with more Nazgul, they chased the free out of Dale, picked up some more Easterlings with The Shadow is Moving two spaces, then locked up Erebor in siege. Would Gandalf and Legolas survive???

Meanwhile, elsewhere in middle earth... Isengard's gigantic 15 hit point army feared no ent attack. Though the Rohrrim fought lustily and luckily at the Fords and Helm's Deep, they was nothing they could do against such hate. Their valiant defense did whittle Saruman's army down, but all the Rohan settlements were captured without Rohan being able to muster a single unit in its own defense.

Lorien and Rivendell were building up their defenses, uncertain which way the nascent Dunlending/Moria army was going to go. Eventually Lorien fell under siege. The fellowship had moved on by that point (not by much), so they lacked for companions and fell too easily.

Back to the DEW line. Gandalf the Grey and Legolas were holed up with a few hungry dwarves in Erebor. The Witch King and company had come from Woodland Realm to finish them, but the siege was incredibly close: 2 dwarf regulars , a leader, and two captains of the west versus three easterling archers. But wait! Olog Hai came down from the hills to help the besiegers. But wait again! Grimbeorn the old, Strider, Gimli, and a lone North elite stormed out of Dale and tried to break the siege! They had Brave Stand and managed to whack the SP down to 2 regulars, taking only one hit themselves before halting their attack. The turn was ending, and the SP needed only one stronghold to win. He had his two erebor easterlings try to finish the beleagured dwarf. The dice rolled: a mutual anihilation! Gandalf, Legolas, and Dain were dead, but they'd bought freedom for Erebor!

In woodland Realm the shadow had a similarly dicey ploy, and he ordered his lone orc to attack the lone elf defender. Again, it was mutual anihilation.

As the sun set in DEW on turn 9, there was but one unit left standing in all of the East: a beorning regular, accompanied by Strider and Gimli. DEW had been saved in its entirity.

sauron But Sauron would not be denied... sauron

The Mouth led the second army out of Mordor, and set his sights on Minas Tirith once again. Merry and Boromir bid goodbye to the fellowship to buttress the besieged defenders: 5 regulars and three leaders. Unfortunately, the Free's hand was clogged with useless special hunt tiles, while the mouth and WK managed to get their hands on some Desperate Battle cards. The Shadow won the siege on the last action die of turn 10!

69 Shadow military dice
22 Shadow ring dice
33 Free military dice
9 Free ring dice (Westermnt, revealed, 1 corruption)

WoW rules helped the FP slightly, but it was hardly a representative test since action dice were totally wacky for the first two turns, each side massively slowing down the other's primary victory condition.

Gandalf the grey!?
Doesn't this guy get killed by a Balrog in Moria? Or, if push comes to shove, impales himself on the sword of a blind orc somewhere around Dimrill Dale?

Oh he wanted to kill himself after seeing he'd entrusted the One Ring to a bunch of non-sword-rolling comic relief hobbits.
