You can put down a card with the front side up (everybody sees the number) or back side up (you can draw a white card).
Maybe the traitor pretended to lay down a card with a high number (to draw a card and screw the others) and pretended it to be a card with a low number.
So you need to shuffle the cards at the end of the quest, otherwise the traitor ist directly revealed.

Some might assume that not letting the group know about a really high card is the sign of a traitor. By shuffling you know that a high card was played, but not which knight played it.
