I know what I am playing on the fourth. The Resistance: Avalon, Dixit, and 7 Wonders.

Out of these three, only 7 Wonders fits your criteria. Good luck!

Good suggestions. But I don't think Avalon would be off the mark. It definitely isn't a party game.

You could print off some new character cards to play Resistance or Avalon with an American Revolution theme!

I was going to recommend The Resistance. It is easy understand, plays a larger group well, and is a blast.

I was just thinking today that when we get together on the 4th of July, the extended family usually plays a card game, but I wanted to take a board game and see if I can interest them in playing something different.
How about 42?

1. It has to be a gateway game or something easy to teach.
Few games easier to pick up conceptually. I'm still a novice; I find the mechanics child-simple but the strategy beyond me. Good stuff.

2. It has to play relatively quickly, I don't want an 8 hour marathon game. An hour or two is fine.
A hand plays in a few minutes. A game (best of 13 hands) in well under an hour.

3. It has to potentially play 8 people because I don't know how many are actually going to show up and be interested yet. This seems to be the biggest sticking point, I have lots of games for 2-4 people or 2-6 people, not many for more.
Tough requirement. 42 is for exactly four. 8 could play at two tables, of course. Or a different number could play Moon.

4. Please, no party games!
Party on, Garth. Everything's a party game!

If it's something I don't have, I'll have to see if I can get it.
Who doesn't have a set of dominoes?

The extended family usually plays a card game
Card players would definitely catch onto to this one quickly.

Finally, what more appropriate theme on Independence Day than a game from Texas? They still think they're independent down there, you know.

Yee-haw!

Solitaire Frenzy - you don't actually have to buy this, you just need a deck of cards for each player. For that matter, there's many card and dice games that could fit your bill.

I've only tried it with 6 players, but you could try speed Dominion. You play like normal, but you split the circle into two groups. Each group plays independently, but still share the same kingdom, money, and victory cards. May not work as well with new players though.

Nobodies said it yet, but it may be a good idea to split into two groups and play different games, just depends on your situation.

I vote for The Resistance.

Not sure why many folks think 7 Wonders is a good choice. Not easy to teach at all.

- Plays very well with 5 up to 8
- It's 50% a card game, so a good gateway from a card gaming group ;-)
- 90 min.

Citadels is up to 7, 60 min.

Resistance, that's a good idea, a bit on the short side again, but maybe something I can throw in.
This has easily filled a game night because people want to keep playing it again. Citadels is also a solid choice.

Get a bunch of different decks of cards and play 8 player Ligretto!

Long Shot is fun and lightweight and plays up to 8 I believe as well.
