With the 150th anniversary coming up, lot of non-specialist media attention being paid to Gettysburg; today even the kid's section in the Washington Post had an article.

But anyhoo, thru this AP article I came upon an interactive map of the battle from the Smithsonian. Offered FWIW - I make no claims as to its accuracy or insightfulness!

Thanks for posting this: it is very impressive. I cannot vouch for its accuracy either, but it reminds me strongly of many Gettysburg battles I have fought (generally following the historical path and with Rebel losses) at towergames.com.

Very cool. I know very little ACW history, so can't comment on tha accuracy. Did want to say that I have played 4 games of Guns of Gettysburg and reading that interactive map gave me shivers. My last game (which was a solo game) followed a very similar track to the historical battle (which I didn't realize at the time). Given how similar the boardgame map and pieces look to that interactive map, it was almost like watching a replay of my game. I had to explain to my wife why I exclaimed HOLY SH*T! while reading my Ipad and eating breakfast.

Cool maps.

Smithsonian tends to be good; I have no doubt the checked and rechecked and feel confident in their presentation. There may be mistakes but unlike many places they will have tried first.

If nothing else, there is a better grasp of ACW history there than many media outlets. To whit, they can compare and contrast to a great Union disaster:

"In a reversal of the Battle of Fredericksburg, where Lee’s forces held the high ground and won a great victory, Union General George Meade held the high ground at Gettysburg. Lee’s forces were spread over an arc of seven miles, while the Union’s compact position, anchored on several hills, facilitated communication and quick troop deployment."

Thank you for sharing this.
