In the adventure phase...When using encounter counters page 8 of the basic rules says the character just has to equal or exceed the rating printed on the counter to win the encounter and gain reward. It does not say you need to pull a challenge card. But the living rule book says the basic mechanic for resolving adventures is the challenge deck. So do you pull a card or not when encountering these counters?

Part 2 if you are using the challenge deck rules and fail the encounter, but did have a high enough rating to impress, does the counter flip back over or get discarded?

The living rulebook on page 14 reiterates what the basic rule book states..that encounters are a simple comparison of your stat to the encounter stat. The only modification to the comparison is the +1 you gain if your character's Age and the encounter's Age match.

Challenge cards (or a d10) are used for other adventuring situations such as assaulting the enemy base, looting their vault, overcoming a guardian of a labyrinth, doing things at Lith's lair, for example, where multiple outcomes are possible based on how well you succeeded or failed.

You will notice that the encounter markers unlike other adventures have a single outcome. There is no range of outcomes depending on an amaze or a FOPP...you either are the one they were waiting for you are not and they have one gift for their chosen one.

Thanks for the response--

One more Challenge Card Q: Can you tell me what the attribute symbols beside the luck test clover and the arrow next to them is used for?

Page 13 of the living rule book under Leveling up.

If your character gets to level up you must draw a challenge card and choose one of the two stats shown to get a permanent +1 to the one you pick. If it is a question mark you get to choose any of them except Speed, Armor, Health, or Damage.

Thanks for clarifying this. The confusion I had is that the living rulebook specifically says that a character can "challenge" an Encounter, which implies that a Challenge card is drawn. I didn't play it that way, because it didn't make sense, but they really shouldn't have used the word "challenge" when describing how Encouters are resolved.
