Does anybody know of any gaming groups in the western MA area? I live in Greenfield and was looking to join a group.

Western Mass Game-group list
Alan,

I live in Amherst. Well, did you ever come to the right place! This is a terrifically active area for gaming...

First, the game nights I know of that occur in public spaces:

Greenfield:
-- Griffon Games
http://www.griffongames.com/
There is Griffon Games (I think they might have changed the name, but they are on Main St.). Every Friday they have a game-night, and stock some Euro games and older, out-of-print hex and counter wargames, they even have a stock of games you can pull-out and play on Fridays, but they are mainly a miniatures shop... nice folks. Lots of miniature terrain set-up, and on a Friday, I've seen 20 people in there playing games!

Sunderland:
-- Phoenix Games
http://www.phoenixgamestore.com/
They also have some Euro games, but are mostly an RPG type of place, a lot smaller in terms of floor-space than Griffon games. They have live-action role play sessions in full armor, if that says anything. Many Sundays Every Sunday now (except March 26th/06), is game day, with the store opening around 2:00 p.m. and the action going until 8:30 or 9:00 pm.are some Euro/Eagle Games/Fantasy Flight sessions, usually at 2:00 pm. They are right on Route 116 (coming from Greenfield to Amherst, you can get onto 116 in South Deerfield). Cramped, cluttered, maybe a little dingy, but nice people with a lot gaming fun.

Hadley (Hampshire Mall)
-- Collectibles & Cards Now named: X9 Games
http://www.hampshiremall.com/mallDirectory.htm
There are two shops with the title "Collectible" in them at the Hampshire Mall. One is all about NASCAR and sports memorabilia, the other The newly renamed "X9 Games" carries American and Euro games, and sells (and they play) a lot of Magic the Gathering and Yu-gi-Go collectible card games. On Wednesday evenings, they have a game night from 7:00 ish until 11:00 pm or sometimes midnight (and even sometimes 2:00 am!). They play a WIDE assortment of games on Wednesdays. Very accomadating owners/workers.

Hadley (Route 9)
-- Sidekicks, Inc
Not sure if this is still open. I see the store front everyday almost, and it looks open, but I've found some things on the net that suggest it closed late in 2005. From the two times I've been there, they have a lot of comics, a whole lot of HeroClix.
(413) 584-6554 - 206 Russell St, Hadley, MA
You can call them, unfortunately, it's too late at the time of this writing for me to verify if they are still around... they are/were such nice shop owners, too!
Sidekicks is gone for good. They closed their doors in December of 2005.

Amherst (UMASS)
-- UMASS Game Hobbyist League

http://www.umass.edu/rso/ghl/
Usually, they also meet every Wednesday, starting at 6:00 pm, and must be out by 12:30, I believe. They are usually on the 8th or 9th floor of the Campus Center at UMASS (the building that looks like a giant waffle iron). A fun, chaotic group. There are some old-school (in their late 40's to early 50's) grognards/wargammers who meet there regularly (fantastic group of guys), and then an odd circus of UMASS undergrads... Muppet Show DVD's and Nintendo Game Cubes usually are presented and a bit loud, but they play a great variety of games there... I've seen Epic Duels, A Game of Thrones, some card games, D&D 3rd Edition, Victory Block Wargames, you name it, they play it. If you need a quiet environment in which to think while playing, bring ear plugs.

Northampton (Route 9)
-- Modern Myths

http://www.modern-myths.com/
The first and most venerable of the game nights that I attend in the area, the owners of this comic and game shop keep the place friendly, well lit, clean, organized and ready for Staurday night gaming. A good mix of games gets played here too, with an emphasis on Euro games (when compared to the other nights mentioned above, although each one has it's share of Euro fare). Saturdays are the night, from 7:00 pm until 11:00. This one tends to start and end on time. The night I know best, with the people who game in the area that I know best, and I think, one heck of a quality night because of the store owners and gamers involved. Also, the owners are just top-notch, have an excellent comics-pull service, and will order you anything you might possibly want.

Northampton (King St. / Route 5)
-- A2Z Science and Learning Store [/b]
http://www.a-two-z.com/
Directly across from the Hotel Northampton and next to the Friendly's Restaurant, this is an upscale toy-shop (wooden and euro-style educational toys abound). Every Friday, they have a game night from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. The staff often plays along, and they have a decent selection of store copies, including abstract strategy, Days of Wonder games, Blokus, and so on. Fun, inviting, and every Friday the games are 10% off the regular price.

Now, in non-public spaces, there are many, many options. For instance, I know of a group that meets to play Wooden Ships and Iron Men, another that meets to play Advanced Civ, I meet with a good gaming friend for War of the Ring sessions, and so on. In fact, I'm looking for someone to help me playtest a new game by designer Richard Berg (famous or infamous guy, depending on who you ask). Look him up in Boardgamegeek, and you'll see what I mean. Anyway, I'm one of 12 selected for the current round of play-testing for his latest game. Interested? It's supposed to be a euro-flavored NYC/Big Apple game.

Feel free to drop me a line....

I have a regular group... we play in Holyoke near Mt Tom at my house on Sundays. Some members of the group also meet in Springfield on weekdays.

Members include myself, these three BGG'ers listed below and 6+ others, and always new people getting involved.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/user/Monday+Bio

We have at least 4 players a week, sometimes as many as eight. The combined collection of all the members is 300+ games. Some of our favorites at the moment in rotation: Caylus, Ra, Power Grid, Age of Steam, T&E...

There is almost always a spread of homemade food and drink, sometimes we order out for pizza, Chinese, etc. There is an open invitation to anyone on BGG to join. We play 3-11pm and usually fit in 3-5 games in that period. We do play every week unless there is a holiday or if I have a commitment. This week is up in the air because Monday Bio (Al) and I are in a poker tournament for $10k that will extend to Sunday if we make it past the preliminary stage on Saturday. So, it is tentative now. Next week and subsequent weeks are open.

Feel free to PM me if you are interested in coming.

thanks for all the replies.
I'll have to stop in at Griffon Games, I haven't been in there in a while, but I thought they were mostly miniatures and CCG .

Modern Myths looks interesting to me, since they have more eurogames.
I'll have to drop by on the first Saturday I have a chance.
