NBA Shootout was a first-party basketball series developed and published by Sony exclusively for PlayStation and PlayStation 2. The second game, NBA ShootOut '97 represents the height of the series as it was considered to be the best basketball game of the time and was often considered better than anything that came out in the following year or two. When NBA ShootOut '99 was cancelled, it was the beginning of the series' struggles. In 2002, the attempts to massively overhaul the PS2 version resulted in enough delays to require the game to be cancelled. More games were released for both the original PlayStation and the PlayStation 2 for the 2003 and 2004 basketball seasons, but neither was a great success and the series was discontinued soon thereafter.
The original games were developed and published by Sony, which eventually created a new sub-company, 989 Studios, to handle the NBA ShootOut series as well as many other first-party games.
